Anti-Toxoplasma gondii Antibodies: Prevalence and Risk Factors among Pregnant Women Accessing Antenatal Care in Some Primary Health Centers in Jos Metropolis, Nigeria

Toxoplasma gondii infection causes high rate of gestational and congenital across the globe is considered a both public health problem neglected disease. The study was carried out to determine prevalence anti-Toxoplasma antibodies associated risk factors among pregnant women attending antenatal care in some Primary Health Centres Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. In this cross-sectional within 5 months between Jan – May 2019, total 182 blood samples were collected from consenting women. Structured questionnaire used obtain data on socio-demography factors. Three millilitres (3 ml) participants. Sera separated evaluated for (IgG IgM) using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). experiment analysed Statistical Package Social Sciences. Out examined, 84 (46.2%) had IgG antibody, 2 (1.1%) IgM antibody while 98 (53.4%) neither seropositive nor IgM. Eleven every 1000 (i.e. 1.1%) recent toxoplasmosis 53.4% not protected against primary thereby underscoring need prevention control during through enlightenment.

We report Toxoplasma IgG seroprevalence of 34.4% among 419 pregnant women in Mashhad, northeast Iran. Soil contact, living in rural environment, and level of education were associated with infection. The prevalence did not increase with age, suggesting high infection rate during childhood and adolescence.
